Retiring in Florida: What You Need To Know
Florida is one of the most ideal places for people to retire to. I’m not even of retirement age and I moved down here last year. I love it here. I wouldn’t trade the weather or climate for anything. There is so much to do here in Florida, no matter where you end up retiring too. Before you pack everything up and move down here, there are a few things you need to consider.
1)No matter where you live now, look at your expenses. It’s easy to get caught up in the beauty of environment of Florida. What are your expenses now? Will they change? Will they stay the same? Will you be moving into a less expensive place of living? Will you want something more expensive, like on the beach perhaps? This is one of the most popular choices for retirees. It does get expensive, though. You need to take a look at what you can afford with bills and what you can’t. The cost of living here in Florida has gone up, and it won’t be going back down anytime soon.
2) What about your lifestyle? Do you plan on going out to eat more, now that you are going to be in Florida? Will you want to stay home more? Everyone is different. Factor this in before you move here. As I said, the cost of living has gone up. Going out to eat and living large doesn’t come cheap these days. Will you be able to afford it?
3) What about your cable and internet provider? What about your phone provider? Will you be sticking with someone like AT&T U-verse in Florida? Do you want to pick someone else? Look into what providers are available in the area which you are moving to. Find out what you can afford and what you can’t.
4) Are you going to receive money from some sort of pension? Do you want to work part-time once you get down here. Many retirees end up working part-time. They do it for a variety of reasons. Some work because they can’t afford to live on what they have. Others do it out of sheer boredom. Many retirees get excited about the prospect of retiring. Two weeks in, they are ready to go back to work again. Will you be one of those people?
5)What about your medical treatments? One of the downsides to getting older is having more medical problems. Will you have enough money to cover these things, as they come up? Will you have to cut back on things so you can cover these expenses?
Retirement is an exciting time, especially when you are moving down here to Florida. Do your homework before you move down. This will make the transition that much easier to go through.
